Hunting Trip Details

Welcome to hunting at Munkedal Herrgård!

Venator Tours has entered into an exclusive agreement with the company that owns this fantastic manor house in Munkedal, approximately one hour's drive from Svinesund.

We are the only company authorised to arrange accommodation and hunting in the associated enclosure for our customers. It is not possible to purchase the hunt alone — only a package solution where you stay at the manor if you wish to hunt. Since this is a unique hunt with few opportunities each year, it is not a hunt for everyone, but for those who wish to spend a little extra to stay well, eat excellent food, and be guided by our staff during the hunt.

Food and Accommodation

On the day of arrival, a three-course dinner is served in the evening, normally at 19:00. The following day, there is a large breakfast with whatever you desire. Lunch is served in the forest as a packed lunch or boiled sausages, as preferred. In the evening after the hunt, there is another splendid dinner. On the day of departure, breakfast is served before we leave. This is the procedure for each day — if you hunt for more than one day, the same arrangement applies for day two and three.

The food is of a very high standard; the chefs at the manor are award-winning, and the service is excellent. The rooms are of a high standard. You are welcome to bring a companion — at a different price than if you are a hunter, of course.

We do not arrange hunts for fewer than 3 hunters, and a maximum of 6 hunters. Adjacent to the enclosure, there is an approved wild game butchery where we skin shot animals, inspect them, and hang them to mature.

Our authorised retail butcher will take care of your animal(s) after the maturation process — he will butcher and package your animal ready for use. This is optional; you can also do it yourself, but we recommend you use him. He is paid per kilogram for what he butchers. All meat is professionally butchered in vacuum packs, labelled — and if desired, sausages, cured meats or other products can be made, as our man is also a chef.

If you shoot an animal but do not want the meat, it is unproblematic — it will be used by the manor.

How does the hunt proceed?

Our guides quietly walk around the enclosure with one or two others; the other hunters will be posted to get shooting opportunities.

Please note: this is a very challenging hunt as we only hunt red deer. The deer are numerous but very wary — so if you are lucky enough to shoot a large trophy, we can tell you that it is at least as difficult as in open areas.

When an animal is shot, our butcher and guide retrieve the animal and take it to the butchery for skinning. We hunt from dawn until dusk, or for as long as you wish. We divide the hunting group into “two”, alternating between stalking and posting.

If a hunter wishes for 1:1 guiding, we arrange this provided it is practically possible.

REMEMBER: Everyone must wear an orange vest, not just a hat, to ensure safety. Venator Tours will provide vests for those who do not have one. It is not a problem to wear such colours as deer only see them as a shade of grey — this colour is not in the animals' colour spectrum, so you are camouflaged even in orange.

Everyone must bring a hunting radio — this is very important for safety. Let us know if you don't have one, and we will arrange it for you.

If you are unlucky and wound an animal, we have a tracking team available from Strömstad who will arrive shortly. If the hunt leader deems that a search is necessary, the shooter will be charged NOK 600 for this, payable directly to the tracking hunter (the same one used by the police in Strömstad).

About the enclosure and the animals

The enclosure is 1,250 acres in size, but in places very hilly — so if it were flat, it would be over 1,500 acres. Since the enclosure has many small valleys and wooded areas, there are many places where the deer can hide, but our guides are local experts and will help you to find animals. There has been no ordinary hunting in the enclosure for over 5 years, so the deer are very wary.

In the enclosure, there are probably around 150–200 red deer, and a smaller number of fallow deer — but only red deer can be hunted.

We primarily hunt antlered deer, but each group can shoot 3 calves and some yearling hinds as determined before the hunt by agreement with the owner of the enclosure.

The animals in the enclosure are genetically from Eriksberg in Skåne, which has Scandinavia's finest deer — so there are very large deer in the enclosure. The largest can have a carcass weight of +150 kg, while smaller animals such as spike bucks weigh from 45–75 kg slaughtered.

It happens that roe deer jump into the enclosure — you can shoot these free of charge as they cannot “legally” be there. It has also happened that lynx and wolves have wandered in — DO NOT shoot them, only report if you see them. The penalties for such killings in Sweden are extremely high.

If you wish to take the meat home, the rule is that you can bring up to 75 kg duty-free. Beyond this, there is a duty of NOK 7.50 per kg (15% on NOK 50). Drive through the red channel if you wish to do this — do not take chances and drive over with the animals in your luggage.

All animals are tested by us, and our authorised field inspector checks all animals so you can be confident they are healthy and fit for consumption.

Safety and Weapon Requirements

  • All weapons used must be Class 1 — i.e., from minimum 6.5x55 Mauser and larger
  • Remember weapon culture — when you meet colleagues in the enclosure or outside for lunch, unload your weapon and show everyone that you take safety seriously
  • Do not load your rifle until you are at your post
  • Those driving must not shoot unless it is 100% safe to do so, and you know where everyone else is
  • The enclosure has many good safe backdrops — use common sense, everyone must come home unharmed
  • Hunters must be sober at the start of the hunt

In the enclosure, there are some towers to post in, but most often, we stand on the ground. We retrieve shot animals with an ATV.

Alcohol is not included. The usual practice is that consumed alcohol is shared among the group, but if individual settlement is desired, it is not a problem. Alcohol will be invoiced after the hunt.
